What Nobody Tells You About Life After Surgery
This is something that’s been on my heart after seeing so many clients post-op. I’ve learned from my clients that surgery isn’t always the hardest part, it’s what comes after. After surgery, whether it’s a minor or major, your body doesn’t always move like it used to, and simple things like getting dressed or making coffee can feel like climbing mountains. This is also where OT can become your anchor in recovery.
You Don’t Just Heal Physically, You Relearn Life
After surgery and from the moment you wake up, every movement has a meaning. Sitting, reaching, walking suddenly become milestones. You may feel slower, or weaker, but here’s the beautiful truth: healing is never linear. OT can help bridge this gap as our scope of practice focuses on what makes life truly meaningful and return to the routines that define who you are. One of my favorite parts seeing clients post-op is meeting them at their lowest point to help remind them the hope of recovery and independence in anything and everything that is meaningful to them. I want to share with you a famous quote that I love telling clients when they are thankful for the people that helped them post-op, “it was always within you.”
What No One Talks About
The mental toll after surgery is real. It’s important that you don’t forget not only did you go through something physical, but emotional. If you think about it, you weren’t the same before you went into surgery, so why expect you will be the same after? This is where compassionate care makes a difference, and why our approach in our private practice is so unique. Your mindset matters, and having someone remind you that it is always within you is deeply powerful.
Healing Happens at…
True recovery isn’t just in the hospital, but in the spaces that hold your daily routines, memories, and meaning…home. Home-based OT is transformative. It allows us to evaluate how you move, rest, and live in your real environment. Not only do we help you recover physically and emotionally, but reconnect back to your life and sense of independence. If you’re recovering from surgery or even supporting a loved one who is, know this: you don’t have to do this alone. I promise you that at BL. By helping you rediscover what’s possible, we help you learn how to re-balance your life and feeling whole again.
If you’re preparing for or recovering from surgery, we’re here to help.
