What I’ve Learned Sitting at 300 Kitchen Tables

When I first started Balanced Living, I never imagined how much life I’d gather. They weren't from textbooks or conferences, but from sitting at kitchen tables with my clients and families. I learned quickly that the kitchen table is where real life happens. I am not only talking about sharing meals with family, but where tears are shed, and where hope is rebuilt. This is exactly what I’ve learned sitting at 300 kitchen tables.

“The kitchen table is where real life happens”

Healing Doesn’t Happen in Clinics Alone

School textbooks don’t tell you that the deepest progress comes from when someone feels safe. I learned more about sitting at kitchen tables than I ever did sitting at a desk in school.

Every Table Tells a Story

I learned quickly that every table is different, some have more chairs than others, some have flowers decorated as the centerpiece, and others have cracks or stains worn with years of memories in them.

Small Wins Matter Most

As an OT and looking at the whole picture when it comes to healing, I have seen the most progress at kitchen tables. I have celebrated milestones like my client being able to eat independently or a family member learning a new technique that helps make their life easier. I have learned through my experience that these small “wins” are actually life changing moments.

The Table is More Than Furniture

Sitting at kitchen tables has taught me to see people beyond diagnoses and focus on what truly matters: living fully, right where they are. I am thankful Balanced Living allows me to do so. I am able to meet clients exactly where they are and where life happens, not just where insurance systems say it should.

I’ve had the privilege to step into over 300 lives, and to witness resilience, love, and healing. Balanced Living exists to bring care back to the heart of the home. Whether at your kitchen table or in your community, we’re here to help you live fully, on your own terms.
