This is why you should attend our brain injury support group
For many survivors and families, one of the hardest parts begins after discharge from the hospital or rehab. The appointments become less frequent, the routine changes, and suddenly you’re navigating a life that looks very different than it did before. While medical care is essential, I found there was something many people were still missing: community and support. That realization didn’t begin when I started Balanced Living. It began years earlier.
While completing my doctoral degree in OT, I dedicated my dissertation to post-stroke depression and anxiety. Throughout my research and clinical experiences, one thing became increasingly clear: recovery is about so much more than physical healing. Emotional well-being, identity, relationships, and connection all play a critical role in rebuilding life after a brain injury. When I began working in the hospital, I had the opportunity to create and lead a weekly post-stroke support group. It quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my week. I loved it!!!!
Of course, as an OT, I could educate, encourage, and support each individual. But what impacted people the most wasn’t always something I said. It was hearing another survivor say, “I’ve been there.” These moments of listening to someone who has been through a similar, life-altering experience is what was needed. It is moments where only a survivor can know, feel, and understand what other survivor is going through. Those conversations were emotional. They were honest. They were empowering. And I knew I wanted to bring that same experience beyond the traiditonal healthcare walls. After starting BL, one of my goals wasn’t simply to provide therapy, it was to build community. Bringing back one-on-one connection with each other.
That’s why we created our Monthly Brain Injury Support Group.
This group is completely free because everyone deserves access to support, regardless of where they are in their recovery journey. Whether you’re a survivor, caregiver, spouse, parent, child, or friend, you are welcome here.
Some people come to share their stories.
Some come with questions.
Some simply come to listen.
Every reason is enough.
At Balanced Living, one of our core pillars is empowerment. We believe healing isn’t just about improving function but it’s about restoring confidence, creating connection, and reminding people that they don’t have to navigate this journey alone. If our support group helps even one person feel seen, understood, or hopeful again, then it has already fulfilled its purpose.
I would be honored to welcome you to our next meeting.
